Amid the devastation by Phailin, two babies were born in cyclone shelters of Kendrapara district. Born on Saturday night, the two babies have been named Phailin.
Jamuna Mallick of Madhupada village under Rajkanika block delivered a baby boy at a cyclone shelter in the village on Saturday midnight only three hours after the cyclone struck the region. The creation of life in the midst of a tragedy was a sign of hope for panic-struck villagers.
Similarly, Suchitra Pradhan (24) of seaside Gupti village gave birth to a baby girl at a cyclone shelter in the village and the villagers who were present in the shelter named her Phailin.
“The fury of cyclonic storm was drowned in our shelter house after arrival of the newborn,” said Sarbeswar Lenka of Madhupada village. Tehsildar of Rajnagar Bhabatacharana Sahoo said the in-laws and spouse of Suchitra were insistent on naming her Durga as she was born during Dussehra. “But people in the cyclone shelters suggested that she should be named Phailin,” he added.
Both the women delivered their babies without the help of any ASHA worker. The elderly women helped them deliver the babies.
